  세계적인 국제수학교육대회인 "International Congress on Mathematics Education"이 2012년 7월 8일부터 15일까지 한국의 서울에서 개최될 예정입니다.
  본 대회를 통하여 세계의 수학교육에 관한 연구결과를 교환하고, 이러한 교환을 통하여 세계의 수학교육의 수준을 끌어올리며, 아울러 한국의 수학교육의 선진성을 대내외에 홍보하며, 이를 통하여 앞으로의 수학교육의 방향에 대하여도 같이 모색할 수 있는 뜻깊은 큰 국제대회가 될 예정입니다.

  이러한 국제대회의 준비를 위하여 KSICMI를 중심으로, 다양한 수학관련 학회 및 단체들의 협력을 위하여, ICME12 위원회 출범식을 아래와 같이 가질 예정이오니, 관심있는 많은 분들의 참여를 부탁드립니다. 감사합니다.

<초대의 글>

전 세계 수학교육계의 최대 축제인 ICME12(제12차 국제수학교육대회, The 12th International Congress on Mathematics Education)를 2012년 우리나라에 유치하는데 성공하였습니다.

  국제수학교육대회(ICME)는 1969년 프랑스 리용 대회를 시작으로 지금까지 11회 개최되었습니다. 이 대회는 수학교육관련 교수 및 수학교사는 물론이고 수학교육에 관심있는 개인이나 단체들이 4년마다 한 곳에 모여 다양한 학술 활동을 벌이는 수학교육자들의 축제입니다. ICME 는 국제수학교육위원회(ICMI)가 주최하며 보통 3000-5000명이 참석합니다.  

   ICME12는 이전 대회의 큰 틀을 따르지만 전에 없었던 여러 행사도 계획하고 있습니다. ICME12를 통하여 국내적으로는 수학교육의 연구역량을 한층 업그레이드 시킬 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 수학을 대중화하고 수학의 중요성을 알릴 수 있을 것이며, 국제적으로는 한국의 수학교육뿐만 아니라 우리의 문화를 소개하며 수학교육의 국제교류를 더욱 활성화할 것입니다.

 이에 ICME12조직위원회는 ICME12를 준비하며 각계의 따뜻하고 아낌없는 성원과 격려에 감사를 드리고자 『ICME12 위원회 출범식』을 마련하였습니다. 한국 수학교육계에 역사적 의미가 있는 이 자리에 초청하오니 부디 참석하셔서 함께 축하하여 주시기를 바랍니다.

ICME in context: ICMI and IMU

The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) was first established at the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Rome, in 1908, with Felix Klein as its first president, and in 1952 as an official commission of IMU. As a commission, ICMI is defined by two constituent components: the Executive Committee (EC) of ICMI, elected by the General Assembly of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) for a four-year term, and the ICMI Representatives of the member states, appointed by or on behalf of the Adhering Organization (typically, the national academy of science, the national mathematical society, or suchlike) or the National Committee for Mathematics (CM), also appointed by the Adhering Organization.

The members of ICMI are neither individuals nor organizations, agencies, etc., but countries. Member states are of two categories: all countries members of IMU are automatically members of ICMI, and, in addition, ICMI may, with the approval of the Executive Committee of IMU, co-opt on an individual basis, as so-called non-IMU members, countries which for some reason or another are unable to join the IMU. There are currently 72 member states of ICMI. Each member state, whether an IMU country or not, is entitled to appoint a National Representative.

From the very beginning, the international journal L'Enseignement Mathématique, founded in 1899 by Henri Fehr and Charles Laisant, was adopted as the official organ of ICMI - which it is still today. ICMI also publishes, under the editorship of the Secretary, a Bulletin appearing twice a year. (Starting with Bulletin No. 39, December 1995, the ICMI Bulletin is accessible on the internet.)
