Principles and Standards for School Mathematics

Richard Wellman

Indiana University

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) is the largest professional organization of teachers of mathematics in the United States. In 1989 they released their Principles and standards for School Mathematics. This document has had a significant impact on math education in the USA. Recently these standards have been updated and made available in electronic format on the world wide web (www.standards.nctm.org). A key feature of the new standards is a collection of electronic examples, written in the Java programing language, that demonstrate and further elucidate the principles set forth in Standards2000.
